How To: Properly Be a Single on Valentine’s Day

How To: Properly Be a Single on Valentine’s Day
Savanna Byles

Feb. 14  is not just your regular day, it is the world-famous Valentine’s Day. Valentine’s Day is not a day for the weak — and by the weak, I mean singles. It is the day that couples everywhere pretend they like each other and get to flaunt their “perfect” relationships. For those 24 hours, they will take over the school halls, movie theaters and restaurants. But what about single people? What are we supposed to do to occupy this seemingly endless day? This capitalist holiday full of roses, chocolates and teddy bears was created to be enjoyed by couples alone. To all the lonely folks out there, here is a list of Valentine’s Day activities that ensure you do not suffer through this day again:

  1. Scroll through your ex’s Instagram and texts and be comforted by the fact they will never find someone better.

No matter how happy they may seem after a relationship with you, single or in a new relationship, never forget the most important thing — you left an impact on them forever. They will never find someone as talented, beautiful or perfect as you. Allow that god complex to take over, despite you being utterly alone.

  1. Make a playlist to put it on repeat and cry

Who does not love a good cry to some of the saddest songs you could possibly think of? Some of my favorite albums for these purposes are Taylor Swift’s “Folklore,” Harry Styles’ “Harry Styles,” Mitski’s “Puberty 2” or Hozier’s “Hozier.” For the best results, I recommend sitting on the floor of your shower and allowing your tears to blend in with the water.

  1. Purchase Valentine’s-themed food and eat it all yourself.

You are all alone on Valentine’s Day — who says you are not allowed to binge eat until you get sick? Why not do so on theme by getting heart-shaped donuts or a chicken nugget heart platter? Food can heal any wound, including those created when couples shove their relationships in your face on just about every social media platform, or even in person.

  1. Read a romance novel or watch a rom-com

Romance movies or novels are sure to drum up some fresh tears. What better way to experience that which you are missing out on, especially on the day of love? Some of my personal favorites include: “Anyone But You,” “10 Things I Hate About You” and “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days.”

  1. Call your mom, grandparents or other family member to hear the voice of someone that loves you.

Although you are alone on Valentine’s Day, this does not mean you are not loved. Everyone wants to know they matter. Even if you do not have a special someone to tell you that you are loved, there are those in your life who can. Time to call them. Maybe they need those special words too.

No matter how you end up spending your Valentine’s Day, remember that you are loved. Even if you may not get that love from a significant other, you have friends and family around you who do.
