The transition from middle school to high school is not an easy one. For many students, high school represents a fresh start. New classes, new friends, new teachers and a completely new environment. It marks the beginning of a new chapter in every student’s life, bringing both exciting opportunities and inevitable challenges.
When transitioning into high school, students often fall into different categories. Some have known exactly which high school they wanted to attend for years. Others are torn between multiple schools and are forced to make a difficult decision. Finally, some students initially choose a school that may seem like a good match, only to realize later that it may not be the right fit for them. These students often become transfer students, moving to a new school in hopes of finding where they will thrive.
Whether the decision to transfer is made by the student or their family, starting over can be daunting. Transferring schools, especially during high school, is an intimidating and challenging experience for many students. It means adjusting to unfamiliar hallways, forming new friendships and learning the ways of a new school, all while keeping up academically.
Many transfer students perceive Miami Palmetto Senior High as one of the most welcoming schools, feeling supported and included from the moment they arrive.
Sophomore Mia Marin transferred to the school this year. As a former student at Coral Reef Senior High, Marin believes that MPSH’s academics and strong sense of school spirit were two of the main reasons behind her decision to transfer.
“The choice of academics that this school offers and the Advanced Placement Capstone program that it gives you, and how it gives you Bright Futures if you complete all the APs, drove me to the school, and so did the school spirit, as it is definitely more involved, like, everyone’s more involved,” Marin said.
Marin explained that while her interest in MPSH motivated her to transfer, support from her parents also influenced her decision.
“My mom was pushing me to do it as she saw how much I loved the school, but was hesitant as I did not know if changing schools was the right choice for me,” Marin said.
After spending just a month at MPSH, Marin began to feel at home. Joining clubs and experiencing the school’s strong sense of spirit helped her feel welcomed and made it easier to meet new people.
Although MPSH’s academics can cause students to transfer, the school’s sports teams also create a huge attraction, leading students to become Panthers.
Senior Hunter Sharp is another transfer student who came from Christopher Columbus High School for MPSH’s various programs.
“I was able to take more classes I wanted to take, and meeting new people just got a lot easier, because I knew a few people here already, so it just made it easier,” Sharp said.
The number of students MPSH has was a selling point for Sharp.
“I was just shocked at how many people were actually here, because I had gone to school where I knew everyone by name, and walking into here felt like I was walking through a full airport,” Sharp said.
Moreover, the number of clubs and sports MPSH has to offer assists many students in finding their group of friends and makes them feel welcomed and at home. For Sharp, the gold club is what helped him connect with people and meet some of his best friends today.
Teacher-student relationships are also a major element in fitting into the school, as they are the people who you see most of the time and see who you truly are. For Sharp, Mr. Corradino is someone who helped him transition from one school to another in the best way.
“I guess the whole deal is like, I just approach [new students], and talk to them, and catch them up on anything to make sure they are comfortable in adjusting,” Corradino said.
Transferring schools typically presents a tough challenge that not all students are capable of facing. However, in the end, this challenge can make students better and stronger individuals, as learning to adapt to a new environment while managing life’s challenges is what makes these transfer students stand out among the rest.
