Applause echoed throughout Coral Reef Senior High’s auditorium as some of District 9’s most accomplished students and staff gathered to celebrate years of dedication, leadership and service at this year’s Night in D9 on Feb. 28. The evening brought together students, families and administration to recognize students whose impact goes far beyond the classroom.
The prestigious Silver Knight Awards, presented by Miami Herald, honor outstanding high school seniors across Miami-Dade and Broward County in categories ranging from Art, Athletics, Science, Digital & Interactive Media, Drama, English & Literature and many more. Nominees are selected not only for academic excellence but for their leadership, character and determination. Miami Palmetto Senior High’s Silver Knight Nominees were invited to the event and recognized for their contributions to their community.
This year’s District 9 celebration was led by Luisa Santos, whose leadership played a key role in coordinating the event. From initially planning the event five years ago, organizing its logistics and ensuring nominees and their families feel welcomed, Santos helps oversee the annual event planning process from start to finish.
“As a product of District 9, when I became a School Board Member, I wanted to cultivate a space that was a celebration of the schools and community that helped spark that love of learning in me in the first place,” Santos said.
An event of this scale requires months of preparation, collaboration and attention to detail. Working alongside her was fellow District 9 board member Sofia De La Grana, who contributed to coordinating communication and execution throughout the night.
“It takes a lot of work. We start in fall, planning for this event, which is in February and before in previous years, has been in later spring, and so it takes a lot of work from a lot of different people, and our office, our District 9 team, is a team of four full time staff members and our team of students,” De La Grana said. “It takes a lot of work and getting all these people together, but it’s kind of the whole central point of our event, because we’re highlighting all our schools and talent and staff from across District 9.”
The event brought together students, educators and families to celebrate the dedication of nominees representing schools throughout District 9. Decorations, program flow, guest coordination and overall atmosphere were carefully structured to create an evening that felt both formal and celebratory.
For Santos and De La Grana, the night was more than just a successful event — it was a reflection of student leadership in action. As peers celebrated academic excellence and service, the board members behind the scenes exemplified those same qualities through organization, teamwork and initiative.
Night in D9 highlighted not only the accomplishments of the students but also the impact of young leaders, such as MPSH’s Silver Knight Nominees, who dedicate their time creating opportunities for others. By stepping into leadership roles and managing an event of this magnitude, District 9 board members proved that service extends beyond recognition — it lives in action.
As the evening concluded and families applauded the nominees, the hard work of the organizers quietly shone through, marking another successful chapter for District 9 and its student leadership.
