All Miami Palmetto Senior High students have experienced a bad day, felt down on themselves or have gone through something that makes them want to stop and curl up. Many people get out of this funk by listening to music, watching their comfort show, baking or reading. For others, reading an uplifting saying or verse, whether from the Bible, a song or someone close to them, can be all it takes to turn themselves around.
Literally, our brains are wired to what we hear and say; negative words can release stress and anxiety-inducing hormones. Higher levels of anxiety are also found in children who practice negative self-talk.
In honor of Valentine’s Day, MPSH students were asked on Instagram which verses and sayings bring more love into their lives. Here are The Panther’s favorites, and what we have to say about them:
“You miss 100% of the opportunities you don’t take.”
A classic saying — yet extremely effective. Everyone has been told this at least once in their life, and each time it has a lasting impact, especially in high school.
“Sometimes people’s motivation comes from their favorite songs.”
This saying perfectly encapsulates just how powerful music can be in daily life. Whether it motivates, heals or helps answer life’s questions, music often becomes a source of comfort and inspiration.
“Carpe diem — seize the day.”
Also seen as a classic, this quote has taken the world by storm. A reminder to people to never second-guess and always take the leap; this has been the core of many famous songs, movies, and a guide in people’s lives.
“Let it all work out.”
While some people find this quote infuriating, it truly does have the power to change one’s mindset. Stressing over the uncontrollable creates tension, nervousness and frustration that remains out of our control. Sometimes, letting things just work out gives people a sense of freedom.
Isaiah 41:10: “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
This powerful verse helps people choose faith over fear, and continues with the theme of not stressing over what you cannot control.
For those who need a little extra love, the following phrases are meant to keep our heads up, calm us down and give ourselves a little grace this February, and every day after that.
“Embarrassment is a mindset. If you tell yourself something is embarrassing, then it is. If you tell yourself it is not, then it isn’t.”
“There are three responses from the universe: yes, not yet or I have something better.”
“Be the person your dog thinks you are.”
“Comparison is the thief of joy.”
“Embarrassment is a mindset.”
“Every day you’re alive is a good day.”
“Every little thing is gonna be alright.”
“Believe you can, and you’re halfway there.”
“I get to do this.”
“No act of kindness is ever wasted.”
As students with busy lives, it can be challenging to avoid the mental droughts we dig for ourselves by not giving ourselves a little bit of extra love. Loving yourself is not always easy, nor will it ever be, but supporting yourself and giving yourself a little bit of mental space can make all the difference in the world.
