Many Panthers may feel SAD this year on Valentine’s Day, otherwise known as “Singles Awareness Day.” February 14 may be the time that romantic comedies flourish and couples express their love with heart-shaped boxes of chocolates and roses, but who says Cupid can’t spark the love of a friendship, too? There are many ways to celebrate V-Day that do not involve self-inflicted torture due to the lack of a significant other.
Instead of wallowing in self-pity with a pint of cookie dough ice cream, going to the movies with a group of friends may be a great option.
“I usually go see an action movie with some friends, but Valentine’s Day is great for all of us single guys to get girls. We just buy them gifts and they’re like ‘oh you’re so sweet!” senior Zachary Radi said.
Being single also has benefits because buying gifts for a boyfriend or girlfriend can sometimes be very expensive. This notion most likely leads to the viewpoint that many Americans share about Valentine’s Day: it is all about the money.
“It’s a cute idea, but I’d have to say it’s definitely a Hallmark holiday. They gain all of this money on our racing hearts and future aspirations; there’s no true way to celebrate that,” junior Alexa Rahmanparast said.
Many restaurants offer specials on February 12, 13 and 14. Going out to dinner with a group of friends is a great option for those who are single this Valentine’s Day.
However, specials are not limited to restaurants; there are many concerts for the occasion as well. Keith Urban is giving out backstage passes for his concert on Monday night.
“Mini” Valentines have become increasingly popular for those who do not have that special someone, and school allows friends to come together and greet each other with these small surprises.
“Every year I try to bring something small for all my friends. I usually just give out chocolates, but last year my friend brought Spiderman-themed cards for everyone, which was a really fun idea. They sell a bunch of themed Valentine’s Day cards at CVS,” junior Alice Krauss said.
The options are endless; many people even participate in a Valentine’s Day “Secret Santa.” However, those who truly feel down due to their single status may want to take advantage of the day and try to meet someone.
