What do we know.

Kurt Panton, Adviser

What do we know? A teacher at Palmetto High School has been arrested for having an inappropriate relationship with a student. What do we know? The relationship went on for months until it was finally reported last week. What do we know? The teacher in question has resigned while an investigation into the breadth and depth of his exploits continues. What do we know? On Monday, March 16th, local news trucks stationed themselves outside of our school to report the latest breaking news.

What do we really know? Those trucks did not show up to interview Dr. Harley when Palmetto High School reclaimed its title as an “A” school this year. That everyday the teachers and staff wake up to try and provide a positive environment where students learn and grow. Our teacher of the year Mr. Hayduk remains humbled, despite his recent recognition, by providing breakfast for hundreds of students and faculty through selling bagels.  Our counselors just finished spending three weeks ensuring next year’s classes for each and every student at our school. What do we know? That Mr. Nerenberg just helped a student decide where they are going to college, ending months — which feels more like years — of anxiety. What do we know? Year after year, Ms. Spivak and Ms. Kaplan have groomed students with exemplary community service projects, giving them the opportunity to compete for the chance to win recognition, not just for themselves but also for our community. What do we know? A student is reading, writing, even tutoring a fellow peer right now because they were inspired by one of us — a teacher. A teacher who was encouraged to do the right thing.  What do we know? That a student stepped forward, spoke up, and reminded all of us to endure the negative press and continue to teach and learn.
