Today, Miami-Dade County announced on their Twitter that schools will be closed on Monday, Nov. 9 due to Tropical Storm Eta.

“Both in-person and My School Online, will be cancelled on Monday…,” the district wrote in their tweet sent out on Sunday morning.

At 12:05 p.m., Miami-Dade superintendent Alberto Carvalho issued a statement regarding the district’s decision to close schools for the approaching tropical storm.

“As we continue to monitor the evolution track of Tropical Storm Eta and after careful examination of latest data from national weather services and consultation with state to local officials inclusive of Miami-Dade county emergency services, we have decided to cancel all school activities for tomorrow, Nov. 9th,” Carvalho said. “The safety and security of our students and our staff is our number one priority.”

Eta has already made landfall in Central America, where 100 people have been reported dead, according to CNN.

According to CBS Local 4, tropical storm conditions are expected Sunday afternoon as Eta moves northward; wind speeds should increase by Sunday evening and flood warnings have been issued for Miami-Dade and Broward should the storm continue moving north. The storm is on track to turn westward sharply as it approaches Florida’s coast.

Conditions should diminish throughout Monday, but Miami-Dade officials plan on assessing the situation on Monday afternoon and making a decision regarding reopening school on Tuesday.
