Usually, an athlete would not have a second thought about the seemingly irrelevant choice of their jersey number. However, the digit on one’s back may mean much more than meets the eye.
Whether it is Michael Jordan’s number 23 or Tom Brady’s number 12, the number on a uniform serves as more than just an identifier. It can be anything from a connection to someone an athlete looks up to, such as a professional in their sport, to a lifelong “lucky number” that they believe enhances their performance.
A jersey number may also connect a player to familial traditions, passed down to them from previous generations. Miami Palmetto Senior High and girls varsity soccer player Gianna Diaz’s jersey number holds sentimental value to her for this reason.
“I’ve had family members who played soccer, and my grandpa chose the number four when he played, so I wanted to use that number as well,” Diaz said.
While this influences many athletes when choosing their jersey number, superstition impacts others. A placebo effect occurs when an athlete believes that wearing their favorite number makes them more confident during their game. Many athletes develop an emotional attachment to their jersey number. For some who have had the same number for years, it acts as a good luck charm. They believe that the specific number elevates their mental strength, creating a unique identity for every player.
“I definitely think the number you wear can boost confidence because if you have an ‘unattractive number’ you won’t play any better,” sophomore and varsity football player Julian Alvarez said.
For fans and coaches, the jersey number can function as an easy distinguisher for how a player is perceived. For example, a number changes the physical attributes associated with it. The cognitive bias between lower numbers, which is associated with a slimmer and faster image, and higher numbers, associated with a more powerful and bulky image, is a common observation and an important factor in athletes’ choices and spectators’ opinions.
MPSH has established strong roots in its sports teams, which not only allows the players’ legacy to continue in the future but also encapsulates what they accomplished throughout their high school years.
“I think a jersey number marks what you have done in your past, and you can pass that number down to your future kids,” Diaz said.
The choice of a jersey number serves as a powerful personal and psychological aspect in many athletes’ careers. It often represents a quiet reminder of their purpose, shaping them into who they are both on and off the field.
