The Best Dressed of Met Gala 2023

Every first Monday of May marks the fashion-forward event, the Met Gala, where celebrities gather in their most extravagant outfits for the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art’s most famous night. This year’s theme was coined “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty,” based on the legacy of the infamous fashion designer and creative director of Chanel until his death in 2019.

Lagerfeld has undoubtedly left one of the largest impacts on the modern fashion scene, synonymous with his iconic Chanel silhouettes and black-and-white looks along with pearl and blush accents. Furthermore, his personal iconic look always featured a pair of black shades, black gloves and a black tuxedo.

Therefore, in honor of Lagerfeld’s iconic designs, many celebrities showed up in looks inspired by the designs and silhouettes of Lagerfeld’s looks, with many sporting vintage Chanel, Karl Lagerfeld’s look, as well as other designs by famous designers inspired by the classic Lagerfeld color palette, with black, white and blush being a main feature on the carpet.

In typical Met Gala fashion, some celebrities take their looks above and beyond, while remaining classy, fashionable and on theme. Below, find some of the best looks featured on the 2023 Met Gala red carpet:

Jenna Ortega

Actress Jenna Ortega, known for her roles in “Wednesday,” “Scream IV” and “X,” showed up in a stunning gothic-inspired custom Thom Browne look, a frequently featured designer on the 2023 Met Gala red carpet. Ortega’s look presented a black corset top paired with a black ruffled high-low skirt adorned with gold chain and pearl accents; tied together with a sheer white button-up and black ribbon bow tie, synonymous with Lagerfeld’s iconic black tie look. Meanwhile, the pearls and gold accents served as a nod to iconic vintage Chanel runway looks. Ortega added some uniqueness to the look and, like her character in “Wednesday,” featured punk elements, such as her sheer knee-high socks and black and white platform brogues. The look was completed with thick black eyeliner and a half up-half down hairstyle, which came back into style from Chanel’s 2020 autumn/winter show.

Nicole Kidman

Modeled after the iconic dress she wore in a 2004 commercial for Chanel No. 5, directed by Baz Luhrmann, actress Nicole Kidman sported a stunning blush tulle gown adorned in feathers and a blush veil headpiece to compliment the dress’s four-meter-long train. The dress features 250 pink ostrich feathers and over 3,000 Swarovski crystals and sequins, originally designed for Chanel by Lagerfeld, and serves as a memoir to her time with him in shooting the commercial. Kidman looked absolutely ethereal in this dress.

Anok Yai

Supermodel Anok Yai looked otherworldly in her futuristic, yet classy metallic gold and silver gown by Pravachol Gurung, possibly an ode to the popular metallic and mesh trends of this year. The gown was paired with large tan sunglasses and sheer opera gloves. Furthermore, the gown is adorned with crystals and tulle and made a statement on the carpet with its unique silhouette.

Anne Hathaway

By far one of my personal favorites of the night, actress Anne Hathway wore a Versace gown which emulated all the perfect elements of Lagerfeld-era, Chanel-haute couture. Hathway wore a sleek deconstructed white tweed gown, held together by gold, pearl embellished safety pins. A combination of styles of the two designers, the tweed, gold and pearl accents cater to the classic Chanel tweed, while the deconstructed look correlates to that of Versace.

Having starred in the highly acclaimed films “The Devil Wears Prada” and “Ocean’s 8,” two films that revolve around the fashion industry, and even one about the Met Gala, I expected no less of Hathaway.

Jennie Kim

Making her debut at the Met this year, Blackpink K-pop idol, Jennie Kim, attended in a reinterpreted vintage 1990 Chanel mini dress from Lagerfeld’s fall 1990 ready-to-wear collection. The dress was classy and chic, featuring a white satin bustier with a black ribbon tied around the waist and a white camellia flower in the center. A matching camellia hairpin and black tights paired with black heels completed the look; while a simpler look compared to some of the more extravagant looks on the carpet, the look was appropriate and looked great on her.

Gigi Hadid

Model Gigi Hadid’s gala look served as the perfect combination of edgy-yet-feminine while still staying on theme. Hadid wore a sheer black gown with silver embellished details by Givenchy. Paired with a two-row pearl necklace, bracelet, and various silver rings, a flower broach and little black sheer gloves completed the ensemble. The flower broach and little gloves were a tribute to Lagerfeld’s look and designs, and her makeup and hair emulated a more modern version of a 90s supermodel.

Margot Robbie

Being a Chanel ambassador and the leading star in the upcoming movie “Barbie,” actress Margot Robbie had to make a statement, and she succeeded. Classy yet a bit edgy, Robbie wore a recreation of a black gown from Chanel’s 1993 couture. The one-shoulder black gown featured a long sash on the right shoulder, a sweetheart neckline, drop waist and a clear corset with gold embellishment on the boning. What really sold this look was Robbie’s 90s blowout and simple accessorization. Similar to Kim, the simple but classy and still very stunning look served as a perfect ode to Lagerfeld.

Sydney Sweeney

“Euphoria” actress Sydney Sweeney’s look exhibited full glamor in her custom Miu Miu gown, a blush mermaid-style garment adorned with embroidered crystals, sequins and beads in gold and silver, and a big black chiffon bow on the lower center half of her dress. To pair with her look, Sweeney wore a black chiffon bow hair piece, and small jeweled gold earrings. The look catered perfectly to Sweeney’s look, while still in Lagerfeld style with the contrasting blush tone of her dress and black chiffon — two color tones that Lagerfeld loved to include in his Chanel runway looks.

Elle Fanning

Actress Elle Fanning expressed her inner flower child with a gorgeous bridal rendition by Vivienne Westwood, paying homage to Karl Lagerfeld back from her fashion shoot with him in his “Little Black Jacket” Chanel Exhibition from when she was 13-years-old. Fanning’s outfit includes a white bridal-style strapless dress with a bouquet of daisies attached to the bodice, paired with a little black jacket and a daisy floral crown with long black ribbons on the side. The floral accents were also reminiscent to Fanning’s memory of Lagerfeld, which she references in an Instagram post, stating how the look is inspired by that of her outfit she wore the day of the shoot, and how Lagerfeld put a floral daisy crown on Fanning’s head, and the little black jacket over the white dress she was wearing that day as a symbolization of her youthfulness, style and personality at the time. While this outfit is not everyone’s cup of tea, I personally adored the story behind the look, and how well the daisy crown, dress and black ribbons correlated to Fanning’s overall soft look and youthful look.

Gisele Bündchen

Supermodel Gisele Bündchen wore a stunning all-white look, with a combination of a sequin striped gown from the 2007 Spring-Summer Chanel Haute couture collection, and a matching big feathered cape to complete the ensemble. Bündchen pays homage to Lagerfeld in that she previously wore the ensemble in a photoshoot for Harper’s Bazaar Korea, which was photographed by Lagerfeld himself. The look was paired with a silver Chanel clutch, white heels, and diamond earrings, all of which Bündchen pulled off beautifully.
