Technology has made the world we live in faster and more efficient. Never before has so much of a student’s life been impacted by technology. But is there a point at which people depend on their technology too much?
“The iPhone has made life easier for me,” sophomore Alexandra Schlesinger said. “But the first day back from break, the alarm clock broke and I was late to school.”
Many iPhone owning Palmetto students were late to school on January 3 (the first day back from winter break) because of a mass glitch that caused the iPhone’s alarm clock application to malfunction.
From cars to computers, technology is constantly being improved to make people’s lives just a bit more simplified. But too often, students find themselves in sticky situations because of the unreliability of their devices and gadgets. Regularly used programs such as Reading Plus often face complications that cause students a hassle. Other students also face problems due to poor Internet connectivity and reliability.
“The other day I tried to submit an assignment through turnitin.com only to find out my Internet was down,” sophomore Timmy Lyons said. “I got my Internet fixed eventually, but it could have been bad.”
Technology has now become such a factor in people’s lives that it is hard to imagine a world in which we can’t depend at all on it. Some wonder if people take technological innovations for granted so much that once they malfunction or the power goes, they do not know how to manage without the technology.
“Everything breaks now and then,” junior Julian von Kanel said. “People should realize that things break now and then learn how to cope with the results. It’s no reason to blame the phone or computer.”
Whether it’s arriving late to school due to an alarm clock malfunction or failure to submit an assignment due to an Internet malfunction, overdependence on technology often results in frustration and stress.
