Since the 2013-14 school year, Miami Palmetto Senior High’s Student Council has evolved to become what it is today. Activities Director Elizabeth Valero expresses how the school’s Student Council started out with just a president, vice president, secretary and treasurer. Throughout past years more positions have been created to build the group’s impact.
“[Students] do not realize how much in 11 years [Student Council] has changed,” Valero said. “It is kind of incredible how much it has become since [2013].”
Throughout the years, these added positions have helped expand Student Council into what it is presently, while also influencing change in the class boards.
“The boards have become so much bigger and so much more involved,” Valero said. “They have their own fundraisers, events and content creation.”
What stands out about the Student Council election for the 2026-27 school year is the amount of participants.
“We had a record number of candidates and a record number of voters, which was huge,” Valero said.
Together, many of the students involved in Student Council all are working towards creating a strong and collaborative school environment.
“We have so many kids in Student Council whose main focus is to make this school better,” Valero said. “This might be [by] reaching out to underserved students on campus, it might be [by] making the day more fun and all of those are valid, awesome reasons to want to be involved.”
When selecting Student Council board, there are hard decisions that need to be made. The difficult part for Valero is having to disappoint students who do not receive a position, even though many candidates are driven with motivation and hold themselves in a professional manner.
Valero has noticed an accelerated ambition in the students applying this year that has really stood out from past elections.
“These kids have done research, looked things up, done such homework to get ready for these interviews and it’s never been like that before, ever,” Valero said.
With a new Student Council board, there is room for renewed energy and motivation to make ideas come to life.
“I always love new energy brought in, I love it and think it is great,” Valero said. “But I also love the kids that have been doing it a long time, and love the traditions that come with what they’ve done over the years.”
Many students and staff members are excited to welcome the new Student Council board and its ideas that will be taken into the new school year.
“It is always very exciting for me to see all these great ideas that the new people bring in meld with the old stuff that we’ve always done, and kind of make like a soup, a brand new soup,” Valero said.
