In the auditorium, the lights, people and cameras can become overwhelming to some. But, these factors do not phase those on stage. The players up there are no strangers to attention; in fact, they have been waiting for this moment their entire lives.
“I just finally get to relax and know that my future is being set up for me,” senior Miami Palmetto Senior High football team linebacker and University of West Florida commit, Jaiden Henry said.
Signing day took place on Jan. 4 at 9:30 a.m. in the MPSH auditorium. The event served as a culmination for these players, as they revealed the school they will be playing for after high school. The ceremony included a speech from Head football Coach Michael Manasco, heartfelt words from the players signing and an undeniable amount of energy.
What went into these players’ choices was not just hard work. Many of them were not only searching for an amazing team they can contribute to, but also a team that suits them.
“I feel like I can come in, be a freshman … be a freshman All-American and do my thing, always. They believe in me from day one, and they always talk to me every day, and that’s my deciding factor on why I chose [Keiser University],” senior and football defensive back Braylen Green said.
Student athletes are not alone when making this decision. Many also have people who have acted as support systems throughout their athletic journey and help them make their big decision. One huge support system for these football players is Manasco.
“I don’t ever want to make a decision for them, but I want to give them all the resources and all the information that they need to make a good decision,” Manasco said. “You know, I feel like some of our kids have really good opportunities, and some of our kids are still fighting for opportunities. So I think it’s important that they make the best decision for themselves.”
Many of the players notice Manasco’s trustworthiness and support, as he encourages them to reach their maximum potential.
“Manasco really pushed me through this whole recruiting process … Manasco is like another dad to me,” Green said.
Signing day is a big deal for these Panthers. The players get to acknowledge the lessons, influences and people that brought them to this moment, making it a day they will never forget.
“I’m looking forward to playing on the field, learning new people and carrying my Palmetto talents to the next level,” Green said.
