Representing a country in sports is an honor few athletes experience. Wearing a national team jersey carries pride, pressure and responsibility, not just to perform, but to embody something bigger than oneself. For Miami Palmetto Senior High’s football and flag football coach Kevin Mujica and sophomore and varsity soccer player Florencia Cáceres, playing for their national teams marked defining moments in their athletic journeys.
Mujica played flag football for Team USA at an international competition, while Cáceres played soccer for Paraguay’s Under-17 national team. Though they competed in different sports and represented different countries, both reached a level of competition where the meaning of the game extended far beyond wins and losses.
“It was an unreal experience,” Mujica said. “Just having the opportunity to have USA across my chest and represent my country alone is something I’ll never forget.”
Mujica’s opportunity came unexpectedly; he was initially selected as an alternate but was called only two days before he was set to travel after a roster spot opened. The call sent him overseas to Israel, where he competed internationally in Jerusalem against teams from around the world.
The experience exposed Mujica to athletes from different countries, cultures and backgrounds, all united by their passion for their sport and love for their country.
“To meet players from different countries and backgrounds and all come together for the same goal was special,” Mujica said. “We were all there to put flag football on the map.”
Cáceres reached international competition through soccer, earning a place on Paraguay’s Under-17 national team. Competing at the youth national level places athletes among the top players in their age group and introduces them to a faster, more demanding style of play. The level of competition requires discipline, mental focus and the ability to perform under pressure.
“When I found out I made the team, I felt overwhelmed because representing Paraguay has always been a dream of mine,” Cáceres said.
National team competition differs from club or school sports in intensity and expectations. Athletes are no longer representing just themselves or their teams, but their entire country. Every performance reflects on the nation printed across their jersey, a reality both athletes experienced at the highest level of youth competition.
For Mujica, that responsibility was felt both on and off the field.
“It means everything,” Mujica said. “To play the sport I love and represent my country at the same time, there’s nothing bigger than that.”
Support from home made the experience even more meaningful. Friends and family followed games through livestreams, adjusting to time differences to watch Team USA compete.
“Knowing people back home were watching and rooting for us meant everything,” Mujica said.
Like many national team athletes, Cáceres balances training, competition and academics while competing at a high level. National team commitments often require sacrifices, including time away from school, family and daily routines. Those demands are part of what makes the experience both challenging and rewarding for athletes competing on an international stage.
“I’ve had to give up a lot of free time to train, but it has helped me grow as a player and as a person,” Cáceres said.
As flag football continues to grow internationally and soccer remains one of the most competitive global sports, Mujica underscored that representing a national team requires more than just athletic skill.
“It’s not just talent,” Mujica said. “It’s how you carry yourself, how you act as a teammate and how you represent the USA on and off the field.”
Although Mujica and Cáceres compete in different sports for different countries, their experiences reflect a shared reality: playing for a national team is about more than just the game. It is about the honor of representing millions of people with every game.
“It feels different wearing Paraguay’s jersey because you know you’re playing for your whole country,” Cáceres said. “That makes every moment more intense.”
For athletes who are fortunate enough to reach that level, their jersey becomes more than a uniform. It becomes a symbol of sacrifice, identity and the chance to play for something greater than themselves.
