On Wednesday, Nov. 17, pop artists Camila Cabello and Shawn Mendes announced their official breakup after more than two years of being together.

Shawn and Camila started out as friends in 2015 when they toured together and wrote their first duet, “I Know What You Did Last Summer.” Since then, they have both written music about each other on their respective albums, such as “Senorita,” “Act Like You Love Me,” “Mercy,” “Roses” and “All These Years.”

The pair both posted on their Instagram stories a statement that read: “Hey guys, we’ve decided to end our romantic relationship, but our love for another as humans is stronger than ever. We started our relationship as best friends and will continue to be best friends. We so appreciate your support from the beginning and moving forward. Camila and Shawn.”

Since they began dating in July of 2019, Cabello and Mendes’s relationship was very public and had thousands of supporters. They celebrated their two-year anniversary in July and performed together most recently at the Global Citizen Live concert in New York on Sep. 25.

Just over two weeks ago on Halloween, the couple dressed up for “Dia de los Muertos” with matching skeleton makeup, so the split came as a bit of a surprise.

Although no longer a couple, Cabello and Mendes promise to remain friends through the breakup, just how they started out.
