Miami City Manager Suspends Art Acevedo With Intent to Terminate Employment

On Monday night, Miami City Manager Art Noriega announced the suspension of Miami Police Chief Art Acevedo, with the intention of terminating his employment.

Noriega expressed his concern surrounding Chief Acevedo’s relationship with the organization, specifically the police department he leads. Noriega explained how Chief Acevedo is not the right fit for the leader of the police department, and Assistant Police Chief Manny Morales will be the temporary replacement until they can find a permanent replacement for the position.

City Commissioner Alex Diaz de la Portilla also issued a statement explaining how Miami’s police officers and residents will be better off without him as Police Chief.

A letter was sent to Acevedo from Noriega providing multiple reasons for his removal. Some of the reasons outlined include an ill-advised interaction with a civilian, Acevedo failing to report damage on his vehicle for 10 days after the damages were seen and failing to report vacation time.

Acevedo sent a farewell message to the Miami Police Department on Monday. He thanked them for their service and expressed his desire for the department to give the people of Miami their best service possible.

Miami Mayor Francis Suarez is scheduled to hold a news conference about the situation today at 2:30 p.m.
