Miami Beach Orders Evacuation of Condominium Tower

On Oct. 27, Miami Beach officials ordered residents of the Port Royale Condominium in Miami Beach to evacuate when they declared the structure unsafe. The building was located on the same street where the previous condominium collapsed last year, nearly killing 100 people.

Residents were told to evacuate on Oct. 26, but their immediate removal by 7 p.m. was not announced until Thursday.

Significant damage was found in the concrete beams located at the garage level. An official inspection report illustrated this severe destruction through pictures revealing damage in the walls of the building, cracks on the columns in the parking garage and water leaking into an electrical gutter. The report also explains the damage can be fixed within 10 days, but the building will have to go through a thorough inspection before any residents may return.
