To Miami sports teams: What is going on? Many Miami sports teams have recently been struggling for little reason. Historically, Miami has served as a solid location for professional sports. Looking back to 2000-10, we had the 2001 University of Miami Hurricanes Football team widely regarded as one of the best ever. Additionally, the 2006 Miami Heat won the NBA championship, followed by some amazing years for the team. The Marlins won the World Series in 1997 and 2003. The team thrived with defensive end Jason Taylor and his Defensive Player of the Year award. Since then, other than the 2010-14 run of the Miami Heat and their 2020-23 run, Miami’s sports have fallen off their once towering pedestal.
Miami Dolphins:
The Miami Dolphins are perhaps the most infamous leaders of Miami’s sports decline. They have not won a playoff football game in 24 years, and in these years, they have only made the playoffs five times. Recently, the Dolphins have had an unfortunate habit of losing star players, overspending on inferior talent and poor drafting. Despite their hardships in the 2025-26 season, their poor record will prove helpful in securing a high draft pick for them — if they do not make the same selection mistakes like they have in recent years.
Miami Heat:
My personal favorite Miami team, the Heat, has been – surprisingly – relatively successful in recent times. When Jimmy Butler joined the Heat in 2020, many fans and critics had low hopes for the team. Yet, the team proved everyone wrong and made the NBA finals in the COVID-19 season. Then, they advanced to the Eastern Conference Finals in the 2021-22 seasons after being the first seed (first place) in the Eastern Conference, losing to the Boston Celtics in game seven. Most famously, though, the Heat made a run all the way from the bottom eight seed to the NBA finals, being the first of that seed to do so. The next two seasons, however, were not as successful. In the 2023-24 season, many of their players experienced major injuries, which led to a messy first half of the 2024-25 season that ultimately led to the departure of Jimmy Butler. Despite this, the current 2025-26 season looks hopeful for the Heat with the addition of Norman Powell to the team.
Miami Marlins:
The Miami Marlins have been very forgetful recently — empty stadiums, bad records and no real “star” players. To be completely honest, I do not remember the last time I watched a Marlins game, or even saw the Marlins in the media. The team’s lack of publicity is truly sad, as I remember them having some decent talent growing up.
Miami Hurricanes Football:
The Hurricanes are an unreliable team. Although they are not a bad team and are ranked pretty highly in the AP poll at the time of writing, there is a lot of controversy surrounding them. Many have criticized the ‘Canes for bad coaching or underachieving play from their quarterback, Carson Beck, but in reality, the team has not won much in 20 years. This could be the year, though, with numerous shifts occurring in poll rankings.
