The Department of Homeland Security has become a major point of controversy, praise and discussion in current American politics. Most specifically, U.S Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. Founded in 2003 under President George Bush as a response to 9/11, ICE is still considered a new agency in America. Current controversy stems from the death of Renee Good, who, despite being an American citizen, was shot and killed by an ICE agent. Good died in Minnesota, and since her death, ICE has sent around 1000 more agents to escalate “Operation Metro Surge,” a government crackdown on illegal immigration.
Many believe that this act of increasing ICE presence within Minnesota is a fear tactic by the government to deter anti-ICE protests and scare illegal immigrants.. Several cases similar to Good’s have also occurred in which many legal citizens were detained, resulting in seven other deaths. Many attribute this to racial profiling on behalf of the government agency.
Those who support ICE often argue that they are doing their job and enforcing laws, and that the deaths of victims could have been easily avoided had they cooperated. Nonetheless, the recent violence has raised moral questions mostly related to the lack of due process. The agency has been respected for the majority of the years of its existence, with no cases receiving national media attention and outrage prior to 2025. The concept of ICE, however, has always been controversial. Many argue that America’s foundation consists of immigrants, legal or not, and that the separation of families is immoral. On the other hand, others believe ICE operations are the cost of ensuring security in the country through requiring documentation, and that one should not take the risk if they do not want to face possible separation from their family.
The views within the U.S. are, as usual, split. The majority does not approve of ICE and what they have done in the recent months, while others constantly defend the recent behaviors that have caused controversy. The most recent death that has happened in Minnesota is the death of Alex Pretti, a U.S. citizen who was shot while being detained during an interaction with U.S Customs and Border Protection (CBP).
No doubt, America continues to be split over ICE operations across America. Currently, Democrats in Congress are blocking DHS funding bills, saying that they will not budge until restrictions are placed on how the DHS operates. As a result of disagreements between Democrats and Republicans over this bill, America is currently undergoing a partial government shutdown, and the next couple of weeks should show whether change will come to DHS operations or not.
