Day of the Dead is a holiday that honors friends and family who have passed away in a celebratory manner. It originally started in Mexico, but many other places and people celebrate the holiday as well.

Day of the Dead commenced around 3,000 years ago. It is celebrated from Nov. 1 to Nov. 2. The first day of the holiday serves as a day  to give peace and honor those who died young; the second day serves as a day to give peace and honor those who died as adults.

Traditionally, the family and friends of those who have passed away leave food and many other offerings at the graves of their loved ones. Friends and family also leave these offerings on an ofrenda, a makeshift altar.

They leave these food and offerings on the graves of their loved ones because the Aztec and the Nahua people believed that once a person passes away, they travel to Chicunamictlán, or the Land of the Dead. The dead must accomplish nine challenges so their soul can reach Mictlan, or the final resting place. The person going through the journey can use the food and offerings to make it easier.

During this celebratory time, many people celebrate the loved ones they lost in a festive manner instead of mourning over their deaths. Those who have passed are said to awaken and celebrate alongside their friends and family on the Day of the Dead. This is due to the fact that during this holiday, the borders between the spiritual world and the living world remains at its weakest point, allowing spirits and living people to celebrate alongside one another. They celebrate by dancing and feasting during this holiday.

This holiday is more than what many people believe it is. It is a way to celebrate the deaths of loved ones rather than treating it as a gloomy and disheartening thing. This allows everyone to keep their loved ones whom they have lost close to their hearts and remember them in a festive manner.
