On Oct. 2, Brazil held its presidential Election, former leftist President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva ran against current President Jair Bolsonaro. Neither candidate achieved 50 percent of the vote, leading to a run-off.

Da Silva won 48.4 percent of the votes and Bolsonaro won 43.23 percent with 99 percent of votes counted in Brazil. Da Silva needs 50 percent of the vote to win the election, which would lead President Bolsonaro to end his presidency after one term.

Bolsonaro has previously dishonored Brazil’s electoral system and even said that he might not accept the results.

Brazil is the fourth largest democracy with approximately 123 million people waiting in line to vote in this election. On Oct.30, citizens will be able to vote again. This has become one of Latin America’s considerably most important elections as the candidates have widely different views of the way Brazil should be run.
