The 80th Golden Globes, held at the Beverly Hilton hotel in Los Angeles on Jan. 10, was hosted by comedian Jerrod Carmichael. This was the first Golden Globes since 2021, due to controversies within the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA). In 2021, an LA Times article revealed that out of the HFPA’s 87 members, zero were people of color. Since then, the HFPA has created a plan for ethical and diversity reform. As a result, the newly elected president of HFPA, Helen Hohne, added 21 new journalists including six Black journalists.

Since the 2021 Golden Globes, the award show has gone down 26% in rating as this year’s awards got a 1.1 rating rather than 2021’s 1.5 rating out of 15. The 2023 Golden Globes got 6.3 million views compared to the 2020 Golden Globes which had gotten 18.3 million views.

Many celebrities did not show up to this year’s awards. Actors like Zendaya and Cate Blanchett did not show up due to work conflicts. “The Whale’s” Brendan Fraser also did not show up, although this was due to previous history he had with the HFPA.

A24’s “Everything Everywhere All at Once” actress Michelle Yeoh and actor Ke Huan Quay won the award for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy and Supporting Actor in a Musical or Comedy. Huan Quay thanked Steven Spielberg in his heartfelt speech for his childhood role in “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.”

Spielberg won his ninth Golden Globe for directing his semi-autobiographical movie “The Fabelmans.” The movie was also awarded Best Motion Picture-Drama.

After 30 years, Angela Bassett won her second Golden Globe for “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.” She has become the first person to win a major acting award for a Marvel Comics movie. In her speech, she pays tribute to Black Panther’s Chadwick Boseman who passed away in 2020.

Jennifer Coolidge presented an award and won Best Actress in a Supporting Role in a Limited Series for her role as Tanya McQuoid in “The White Lotus.” Her speech trended on Twitter and was quickly classified as “iconic.” When Coolidge came out to present an award, she discussed with the crowd her fear of tripping and not reading the teleprompter correctly when she presents.

At the Golden Globes, they have two honorary awards given every year, the Cecil B. Demille Award and the Carol Burnett award. This year’s recipients were Eddie Murphy for the Cecil B. Demille award and Ryan Murphy for the Carol Burnett award. During Murphy’s speech, he references the 2022 Oscars slap when talking about the things you can do to achieve success and prosperity.

Throughout the night, win or lose, the 2023 Golden Globes opened the doors to the start of the 2023 award season.
