On Mar. 15, 2021, Miami Police Department chose a new Miami police chief from eight finalists to replace past chief Jorge Colina. The new chief, Art Acevedo, is one of the first ever chiefs chosen from another state.

Former Chief Colina has worked as the Miami Police Chief for the last 3 years and has worked in the department as a cop for over 30 years. As his first year as Police Chief, he had one of the lowest homicide rates the city of Miami has ever seen. He now passes down his legacy to Acevedo.

Acevedo comes from Houston, where he previously worked as the chief for the Houston Police Department, which employs over 5,400 people. As the police chief of the Miami Police Department, he will potentially lead around 1,400 people. Acevedo starts his new job four to six weeks from now once he has settled into the area of Miami.

Acevedo has stood for gun control by walking alongside George Floyd protestors. He plans on disciplining and calling out officers if he sees they do not complete their tasks.

He has maintained a reputation as a top cop and plans on keeping the title in the new area he joins. He also plans on growing a bond and a sense of trust within the community as he starts work as the new police chief.
