Every summer has those pieces everyone just has to have. The summer of 2025 was no exception, with TikTok and Instagram closets filled with colorful co-ords (two-piece matching outfits), playful patterns and new accessories. Each “microtrend” might not remain in the long term, but it definitely made a mark on this summer.
Over the summer, bright shades were set aside and replaced with the color of the season: Butter Yellow. This soft pastel gave the summer’s outfits a bit of a playful vibe, while also keeping their chic style. This color was found everywhere from sundresses to nail polish. Think sunshine and beach, but muted enough to still feel classy.
Classic will never die. This summer, stripes made a strong comeback in sailor-inspired looks and pinstripes all over. Stripes were found on every button-down shirt and linen pant, elevating both casual and fancy occasion outfits. The versatility of the pattern made it such a staple this summer, exuding lots of coastal vibes.
Retro was also back this summer. Polka dots had a major presence in this summer’s wardrobe, mainly in black-and-white and oversized patterns. Dots covered the most popular dresses, skirts and even swimwear, nodding to vintage styles with a Gen Z twist. Likewise, the Pucci and Missoni-printed outfits were huge this summer. Both brands are known for their retro-patterned clothing, and retail brands followed their lead, giving people outfits full of zig-zag stripes and funky, paisley satin dresses.
Additionally, this summer was taken over by two-piece sets. Matching skirts and tops, denim co-ords, athletic wear and even casual shorts and tops made getting dressed effortless while still looking put together. They worked for dinners, walks in the park or even just getting an iced matcha drink.
With Parke sweatshirts taking the summer by storm, the trend of the mock-neck sweater followed. This transitional piece paired well with comfy shorts, linen pants and denim bottoms. This staple sweatshirt set the tone for current fall trends that fashion-lovers will be able to enjoy throughout the next few seasons.
If anyone has scrolled on TikTok in the past few months, they are aware of the viral Labubu accessory. These little monster plush key chains have taken over the purses of every Gen Zer. While a little disturbing, Labubus add a little character to every outfit.
Overall, these microtrends made summer style feel fresh and creative. Butter yellow, matching sets and even polka dots gave everyday looks a little more personality. Trends change quickly, but this summer’s looks left a mark and prepared fashionistas for whatever comes next in the fall.
