The preparations for the 2025-26 University of Miami sports year are underway, and here is what you need to know.
Men’s Football
Coming off a great season with a disappointing end, the Canes are back and looking to win it all this year. With the departure of star quarterback and National Football League number one overall pick Cam Ward, the Canes had a large hole to fill. Head Coach Mario Cristobal filled that hole with the top-ranked transfer and former University of Georgia quarterback, Carson Beck. Beck is a two-time College Football championship winner with valuable experience and leadership. With the addition of American Heritage High School standout receiver Malachi Toney, the offense is looking to return as strong as last year.
The main area of criticism from last year’s team was their defense. The defense played a big part in their losses, as they lost a 21-0 lead that could have put them in a good position for a playoff spot. With a new defensive coordinator stepping up, Hurricanes fans have much to be excited about.
I attended the Hurricanes’ spring game, and while Carson Beck did not play, the receiver and running back play looked very promising. For example, Toney played very well, scoring a touchdown at only 17 years old.
Overall, the Canes football team has promise and many bright spots they can highlight..
Men’s Basketball
Coming off a poor season with a record of 7-24, new head coach Jai Lucas is looking to bounce back. With a complete roster reset, the Canes have a new look with only two players not being from Florida.
Having home talent was a point of emphasis for Lucas; he wanted to give these players opportunities to come home.
Standout recruits include the 21st-ranked high school senior Shelton Henderson, former Michigan guard Tre Donaldson, former Indiana forward Malik Reneau and more.
The Hurricanes have an all-new outlook with new players and coaches who show promise. Jai Lucas was formerly the assistant coach at Duke University, a school known especially for their impressive basketball program.
Between standout football recruits, and an all new basketball program, the University of Miami men’s basketball and football teams have big years coming up for them, and fans should be excited to see how far they will go.
