Just past midnight on May 16, 10 inmates from Orleans Parish Jail in New Orleans escaped after tampering with the door of Cell Delta 1006. Officers were unaware because it occurred during “Lockdown Time,” meaning the prisoners were locked in their rooms for the night, and nobody knew they were gone until two hours had passed.
The inmates fled through a tiny hole behind a toilet one by one and left a comment on the prison walls — “To Easy LoL.”
Their ages range from 19 to 45 years old. Many serve serious charges, including murder, aggravated assault with a firearm and domestic abuse battery. Officials say the escape was premeditated, and the escapees may have had inside help from a corrections officer.
The group jumped a fence along Interstate 10, using blankets they brought to shield themselves from the barbed wire.
Many civilians in the area are worried because the inmates may be armed, and currently, only three have been caught, making this a three-day ongoing search. This event also triggered a widespread manhunt across Louisiana and seven nearby states: Texas, Mississippi, Arkansas, Georgia, Oklahoma and Tennessee.
