The Return to Hogwarts: HBO Max Announces Harry Potter Reunion Special

On Nov. 16, HBO Max announced the premiere of the Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts special. The television special — set to air on Jan. 1, 2022 — will reunite the franchise’s main Gryffindors: Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter), Emma Watson (Hermione Granger) and Rupert Grint (Ron Weasley).

Based upon the book series by J.K. Rowling, the Harry Potter franchise has expanded immensely. The seven Harry Potter books have sold over 500 million copies, making it one of the most popular book series of all time. The books were then adapted into eight films, which have grossed nearly $8 billion worldwide. In 2016, Warner Bros. Pictures released the first film from the “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” franchise, which focused on events leading up to Harry Potter’s time at the infamous school of witchcraft and wizardry: Hogwarts. The Wizarding World of Harry Potter Theme Park at Universal Studios in Hollywood, California and Orlando, Florida also exhibits a chain of themed areas based on the franchise.

This reunion special marks two decades since the first Harry Potter movie, “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone,” hit theatres. Shedding light on the production of each of the eight movies, the special features cast interviews and shows cast conversations. Viewers can also expect other fan-favorite actors and actresses, such as Robbie Coltrane (Hagrid), Tom Felton (Draco Malfoy), Ralph Fiennes (Lord Voldemort) and Gary Oldman (Sirius Black) to appear on the special, among others.

In addition to HBO Max, fans can watch the special on TBS and Cartoon Network in the Spring of 2022.
