This week, President Biden will visit Hiroshima, Japan. The President is visiting the city to attend a G-7 summit focusing on the current global problems. The summit will begin at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial. The Japanese Prime Minister, Fumio Kishida, hopes that the G-7 summit will discuss the danger of nuclear weapons.

At the time of the visit, nuclear tension is currently high, as of January 2023 its a DEFCON Level 3.  China is increasing the nuclear arsenal and North Korea is testing missiles and threatening South Korea. Russia and the U.S.have been questioning whether New START, a nuclear arms control treaty, will be allowed to expire in 2026.

Hiroshima has been especially relevant in terms of nuclear weapons. On Aug. 6, 1945, U.S. President Harry S. Truman ordered for an atomic bomb to be dropped on Hiroshima. This led to the entire city being destroyed and killing 100,000 people.
