On Feb. 5th, the Miami Palmetto Senior High School girls varsity basketball team won the District championship. The team played against Holmes Braddock Senior High School and won with the score of 50-35.

According to the team, the game started strong and ended even stronger.

Basketball season started in late November of 2020, and Coach Donnie Martin and assistant Coach Mujica, have led the girls to many victories alongside this most recent one. This marks the teams second consecutive win in the District Championships.

They have started to prepare for their next game against Southwest Miami Senior High School, whom they play on  Feb. 11th. This game could put them on the path to regionals.

“Coach Donnie has prepared us very well to push and win every game, he pushes all of his players to play to the best of their ability,” varsity freshman Sydney Oren said.

The girls have practice from 3:30 p.m to 5:00 p.m, Mondays through Fridays, unless they have a scheduled game.

The team is currently in a “basketball bubble,” a room they must remain in throughout the school day to lessen their chances of exposure to COVID-19 and risk of quarantine.

The girls can only leave the “bubble” (the iPrep room at Palmetto) to eat lunch. They have taken precautions to stay safe from the virus. The precautions include having all desks six feet apart, masks on at all times and no contact while in the classroom.
