Interview: Yvette Mckinney

What challenges have you overcome as a women athletic director?

When I first started 25 years ago, many male coaches that were not excited about me even having a job in the first place, were not at all supportive of me. During this time, there were no other female Athletic Directors – now we have at least 10-12 in Miami Dade County.

How have things regarding your gender and job changed since you first started?

Now the men are more defiant in doing things that they are asked to do from me. They are also much less prejudice as far as my work goes. I feel like women have come such a long way in this field.

Were you discouraged by the prejudice attitudes toward you?

No discouragement – I was raised by my parents that I was capable of doing what I wanted to do. I had the knowledge and will to do this job, and look where I am now.
