El Estilo De Miami: Miami Fashion Week 2024

In a city of food, fashion and all things pop culture and trend, the annual and long-awaited Miami Fashion Week 2024 took place from Jan. 24 to Jan. 28. MFW is accessible to all interested in shows throughout the city.

Known for their amazing visions, Sergio Salerni, Ester García, Michela Crosa and Lourdes F. Velasco organized Miami Fashion Week. During MFW, a viewer encounters new styles, art, music and a true “Miami” experience distinct from any other fashion week.

The main designer of the event, Karl Kani, is known for his hip-hop and street-wear style, giving him the title, “Godfather of Hip-Hop Clothes” and “Godfather of Urban Streetwear.” Inspired by his life in New York, Kasani has made a hip-hop empire in the fashion world, ultimately leading this fashion week to center around the style of streetwear.

Alongside Kani, designers Giannina Azar, Angel Sanchez, Agatha Ruiz De La Prada, Yas González, Rene BY RR and Lisa Vega all had their unique and eye-catching designs up for display on the runway.

On day one, González’s designs made their MFW 2024 debut, where they stand out, centered around her Cuban-American heritage. González has made her mark in the fashion world by channeling her Latin identity, being recognized as a rising star in British Vogue and having her collections showcased in many hotspots like New York, Paris, Vancouver and Dubai.

“My favorite part of MFW has to have been the move away from minimalism we’ve been seeing in the past few years in fashion. I’m a big fan of maximalism, so seeing this shift is so exciting. As such, my favorite looks came from Cuban designer Yas González. The use of Cuban and Latin art is so striking and beautifully cacophonous. The models really looked like walking paintings,” senior and Fashion Club Founder and President Amberly Calero said.

Ruiz De La Prada’s designs also took the stage, earning her yet another successful fashion show showcase, where her eccentric, colorful Latin designs filled the camera rolls of many and models entertained with flamboyant and fun walks. Ruiz De La Prada has represented Spanish fashion on prominent global runways as a guest of honor.

On day three, MFW held a Sustainable Summit at Miami-Dade College in the Wolfson Campus Auditorium, where two panels featured Matt Levine, the founder of Chlorophyll Water, Gabriella Smith, the Founder of The Upcycle Project and Michelle Salas, the founder of Lady Green Recycling.

2024 Miami Fashion Week brought culture, awareness, fashion of all styles and fashion lovers together, bringing another unforgettable and diverse experience open to our city of Miami.

“I think that to some extent everyone agrees with the basic concept that “fashion is a form of self-expression”, but I think people also forget that it can be more than that. Fashion is a cultural signifier; more than telling people who you are it tells people where and when you are. This is of tenfold importance for us in Miami because everyone has a different who, where and when in our city,” Calero said.
