Is Apple becoming Xcessive?

October 16, 2018

A rundown of the new iPhone Xs, Xs Max and Xr

In the back pocket of nearly 700 million people resides an iPhone, according to BMO Capital Markets.

Since the creation of the iPhone by Steve Jobs in 2007, 21 models have followed the original. Each model is a step forward into the future with new technology and enhancements that make consumers want to buy more.

The newest models are the XS and XS Max which were released on Sep. 21. The XS Max offers the largest display available for iPhone, while the XS appears to be an updated version of last year’s iPhone X. The 6.5 inch display on the XS Max raises some questions for concern for some consumers.

“If phones get much bigger it will seem like people are putting iPads up to their ears to talk,” sophomore Julianna Medina said.

Both the XS and the Max start at 64GB and go up to 512GB. The only major difference between the two phones is the size. Apple first introduced the ‘plus’ as an option with the iPhone 6 and has since offered a bigger version of their phones for those who prefer it.

“The only reasons that I would choose one of these phones is for the face ID and I find the animated emojis pretty cool too,” Medina said.

The XS has a starting cost of  $999 for the 64GB model, while the XS Max starts at $1,099 making it the most expensive iPhone on the market. Some people argue that paying $1,000 for a phone is not worth it, while technology fanatics are perfectly content with dropping 4 digits for the new iPhone.

“It’s a phone, not an Xbox,” sophomore Evie Cooke said.

Apple has also decided to reintroduce gold as a color option. Gold was dropped from the color list upon the release of the iPhone X which was only available in black and silver.

Following the XS and XS Max is the Xr which is being marketed as the more “affordable” option and will be released Oct. 19. The Xr starts off at $749 for the 64GB version.

Apple has generally stayed neutral with its color options, offering mostly whites, golds and blacks since its creation. The Xr is available in 6 colors: red, yellow, white, coral, black and blue. These colors haven’t been available since the 2014 with the iPhone 5c.

“I would get blue or red because I like the colors,” Cooke said.

The color options are not the only thing that separate the Xr from the other new iPhones. With the iPhone 7 Plus came Apple’s first look at a phone with two cameras. Most of the models leading up to the Xr have had two cameras, but the Xr goes back to its roots with only one.

Based on the increased popularity of the iPhone and Apple as a whole, there is a high chance that more iPhones will follow the 21 that already exist.
