ICYMI: Philips guides Palmetto to victory in Girls’ Volleyball

November 9, 2015

The Palmetto girls volleyball team had already lost the first two sets. The scoreboard read 2-11, but that did not stop them from an improbable comeback against the rival Killian Cougars during districts.

Despite the huge drawbacks, they turned the game around and won the next three sets and took the district title. This may be the most important win in the team’s history as they won their place to go to regionals. They went to districts most recently in 2012 but suffered a defeat against Lourdes Academy.

Palmetto girls’ volleyball captain, senior Lauren Philips, kept her team’s heads up and motivated them to continue playing with their best effort.

“I became more of a leader,” Philips said. “I helped them improve and had faith in them to come back from a huge deficit.”

The regional girls volleyball team played on Mckinney Court at MPSH on Wednesday, October 28th at 7 PM. Palmetto played against Southwest Miami Senior High School.

The expectations did not meet for Palmetto’s team. The Southwest stole the victory in a four-set game (25-22, 25-21, 23-25, 25-16).

Palmetto found themselves in the same scenario as the district. They started off with the loss of two sets and tried to turn the game around.

“Before going into the game, I was pumped and excited,” junior Julia Decker said. “I felt like we could win. Mentally wise, it could have gone better. While we were in the game, we missed a lot serves.”

Despite the loss, the team made an exceptional play with Philips recording 19 digs, Addie Arill playing 26 assists and Julia Decker leading Palmetto 16-6 with 11 kills.
