“Goodbyes Stink.” The words of Michael Scott played by actor Steve Carell in his last episode on April 28 of NBC’s “The Office.”
“I can’t believe Steve Carell is leaving ‘The Office,’” sophomore Adam Stebbing said. “It’s one of my favorite TV shows and it will never be the same without him.”
After seven seasons as Michael Scott, regional manager of the fictional paper company Dunder Mifflin in Scranton, Pennsylvania, Steve Carell finally called it quits.
“The Office” was first piloted by NBC in 2005 and was based on the British comedy by the same name. The comedy is filmed in documentary-style and follows the employees of the mid-sized paper company Dunder-Mifflin through their rather unusual daily adventures. The show took off immediately, gaining tremendous popularity and a large following.
Carell’s decision to leave has left audiences wondering who will take the position as the new regional manager; Will Ferrell appeared as a temporary figure on the show as the new regional manager DeAngelo Vickers.
“Will Ferrell adds a lot to the show,” freshman Jared Cohen said. “I wish he was staying permanently. He is one of my favorite actors.”
Another NBC show that has left viewers wondering about its future is “30 Rock,” Tina Fey’s comedy about the production of ‘TGS with Tracy Jordan,’ a fictional sketch comedy show. The show opened to rave reviews from critics in 2005 and has remained popular.
Rumors surround actor Alec Baldwin, who has played Network Executive Jack Donaghy for the last five seasons, about possibly leaving the show at the expiration of his contract in 2012. Creator and actress Tina Fey has also contributed to the uncertain future of the show, pushing the scheduled premiere back to mid-season due to her pregnancy. Her contract also expires in 2012.
“Without Alec Baldwin on ‘30 Rock,’ the show would not be nearly as successful,” junior Gilbert Vieux said. “If he leaves, I think the show will just fall on its face.”
Prior to the beginning of this year’s season, Oprah Winfrey announced that this will be the last season of the “Oprah Winfrey Show.” Since her show first aired nationally in 1986, it has become one of the most-watched talk shows in history. However, she will be expanding her very own television network, suitably titled the “Oprah Winfrey Network” (OWN).
“Part of me was excited for the big finale, but I was also disappointed that it was ending,” junior Shannon Portuondo said. “After so many years on air, I will definitely miss it.”
HBO’s “Entourage” will also run its last season after a total of eight seasons on the air. The series follows movie actor Vincent Chase and his close circle of friends and agents throughout Los Angeles. The final season’s premiere will air July 24.
“I’m excited for the last season of ‘Entourage,’” sophomore Brett Toister said. “After so many seasons, it’s hard to believe it is ending.”
