Some Aren’t Equal

Videos emerging from University of Oklahoma’s Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity went viral after members expressed their blatantly racist views in a bus ride chant. David Boren, president of the University of Oklahoma, responded with the expulsion of the two students, Levi Pettit and Parker Rice, along with the closing of the fraternity, forcing all members to leave the university or find housing elsewhere. Prior to the punishments, the president of the university made an announcement of heavy investigations and ensuring the impossibility of the recurrence of such conduct.

Other individuals expressed no tolerance to this behavior. Oklahoma’s top football recruit, offensive lineman Jean Delance, publicly announced his now dead desire to attend the university. One day after the racist video’s appearance online, Delance de-committed from Oklahoma via Twitter after having been committed since November.

“I think the player shouldn’t have de-committed” freshman Fredrick King said. “He’s throwing away a college career over the opinion of people that he won’t even be dealing with anyway.”

Delance clarified that he had nothing against the staff, which were welcoming when he met them two days prior. Will Ferrell, a former fraternity brother, also stated his sentiments against the event, wishing to ban Greek life after the video hit the Internet.

The chants were apparently taught to the members of SAE by a fraternity brother from another university. Investigation of the spreading of the racist song expanded to universities in Louisiana and Texas. The board of trustees and alumni of the University of Oklahoma’s SAE chapter released information that the chants began three to four years ago.

The family of Levi Pettit released a statement on grounds of his expulsion apologizing profusely for his racist declarations. They believe that their son would never act upon the words of the chant.

Soon after, Parker Rice released a statement apologizing for singing such phrases which were taught to him, and admitting to having been intoxicated. As a minor, invalidity remains in this excuse.
