Senior captain inspires team: David Grossman
The boys’ lacrosse team, currently ranked 28th in the Florida Club district and second in the FL SFIA-4 district, has 22 seniors, three of which are team captains – seniors Chris Burg, David Grossman, and Patrick Schaefer.
Grossman has been playing lacrosse since he was in the seventh grade, and he now plays attack on the team. Grossman claims he found motivation to start playing lacrosse within his family.
“My older brother… I saw him play and I looked up to him,” Grossman said.
He credits practice and rest for his success on the field, finding creative ways to practice even when not out on the field.
“I get a good night’s sleep, I shoot goals at Palmetto or [practice throwing] against a wall,” Grossman said.
Grossman has high expectations for his team for this season and hopes to win.
“This season looks promising; I think we have a shot at winning districts,” Grossman said.
Schaefer enjoys playing with Grossman and has high praise for Grossman both on and off the field.
“David is a good player; probably the best attacker on [the] field. He’s a good leader and gets everyone to hustle and do good [sic] all the time,” Schaefer said. “He’s a good friend, and he’s always happy.”
Sophomore starter charges ahead: Kaylee Scott-Pennington
The girls’ lacrosse team has a rising star playing center: sophomore Kaylee Scott-Pennington. After joining the team last season, Scott-Pennington is exceeding expectations and playing an ever-larger role on the team.
“I wanted to play sports and my friends played it [lacrosse]. I heard about it and went to the meetings and tried it out because it’s so different,” Scott-Pennington said.
Scott-Pennington credits her improved play to her dedication off of the lacrosse field.
“You just practice more at home. I catch and throw [lacrosse balls] with my dad and play wall ball. Now I have a [lacrosse] goal at home, [but I still] need to practice more at home and work with the team,” Scott-Pennington said.
Scott-Pennington does not care about her status as a sophomore among juniors and seniors.
“I don’t mind it as long as we have a good future,” Scott-Pennington said.
Scott-Pennington has high expectations for this season.
“[We have] a lot of good players on the team,” Scott-Pennington said. “I want to make it to districts and win as many games as possible. [I do not want to] let other teams’ reputations to get to us.”
