A sea of blue and white shines in the stands. Students cheer for their team, then silence consumes the field as anticipation grows and tension rises. With this undefeated girls’ soccer team, the sky is the limit.
The girls’ soccer team has proven their determination as they beat both of their rivals, Killian and Coral Reef, twice this year. But the goal for this year is not only to beat rival schools, but also to advance to states and come out victorious. Last year the soccer team lost to Lourdes High School in Regional Finals and hopes to redeem itself this year.
Dominant players like senior captains Alec Spivack and Dasha Munoz replace the two seniors from last year. However, the team includes other seniors like Samantha Rolph, Laura Piedrahita, and Jamie Hunter.
“This is probably the best team that I have been on since sophomore year,” Spivack said. “We are more consistent, and a lot of girls are stepping up,”
But one underclassman in particular has caught the eyes of many and even started this year on varsity: freshman Shelby Denkert. She leads the team this year with 14 goals and believes Palmetto has what it takes to reach states and come out victorious.
“We always try our hardest and we never give up,” Denkert said.
As the regular season draws to a close, the playoffs begin. The girls continue to practice for Regionals and States, hoping to be successful this year.
“The girls work very hard, and they are very humble. They know that they have to play 110% all the time,” Coach Lynzy Segarra said. “The collaboration of the team is a lot higher and overall better than last year.”
The team ended their regular season with fifteen wins and only one tie. They are ready for the challenge that awaits them at Regionals and States. The players feel confident and they trust each other immensely.
“Each one of us has a different strength, and that allows us to work well together,” Munoz said.
The focus and determination says it all for this soccer team. The players are willing to give it their very best in both the regular season and the post season. With an attitude like this, the girls’ soccer team has what it takes to be successful this year, and in the years to come.
