Former Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez was pronounced dead after he was found hanging by his bed sheets yesterday morning.
Hernandez, a former All-American when he played at the University of Florida, was a part of the BCS National Championship with teammates Tim Tebow, Percy Harvin and Mike Pouncey. This team won in 2008 under the leadership of coach Urban Meyer. Hernandez was drafted in 2010 in the fourth round, surprising after his college performance. The Boston Globe had released a story about Hernandez admitting to drug use which caused his draft stock to fall.
During the 2010 season, Hernandez was the youngest player on any NFL roster and was given the honor of Pepsi Rookie of the Week after his performance against the Green Bay Packers, where he caught two touchdown passes. In his 2011 season, Hernandez helped lead the Patriots to an appearance to Super Bowl XLVI where they fell to the New York Giants 21-17. Hernandez was later released by the Patriots after the 2012 season after news came of a possible shooting, reported on by the Boston Globe where Hernandez was found not guilty.
In June of 2013, Aaron Hernandez was investigated for the death of one of his friends Odin Lloyd. Lloyd’s body was found about one mile away from Hernandez’s house. The Patriots made made a decision that if Hernandez was to be charged with anything, they would release him. On June 26, 2013, Hernandez was taken from his home in handcuffs and the Patriots released him within a couple of hours. He was found guilty of first degree murder and sentenced to life in prison with no opportunity for parole.
On April 19, when things were finally beginning to look up for Hernandez. Hernandez was being investigated for another murder charge but was found to be innocent and may have had the chance to get out of jail. He responded by reportedly taking his own life by hanging himself with his bedsheets. Three notes were left in the cell which has led investigators to believe that this was a suicide.
