Renzi: four boys and a dream

Chris Garzon, Danen Reed, Christopher Villasmil and Claudio Perez have formed an alternative rock band known as Renzi, making appearances to share their music with the community. Renzi recently showcased their music at the Helen Witty Gala and a performance at Bloomingdales, along with Palmetto’s very own poetry night. Three of the four band members find their home at Miami Palmetto Senior High school, so familiar faces in the audience and on stage appear when one attends their performances.

The two guitarists of the band, seniors Chris Villasmil and Claudio Perez, began playing the instrument in fifth and sixth grade. With similar background in music and beyond supportive fathers, the pair hit it off.

“[Renzi] is very guitar driven,” senior Garzon said. “We play more alternative rock than anything,”

To those who have yet to experience their music, this description sums it up quite well.

The night Renzi debuted their band to their peers, they played an acoustic cover of “Uneasy Hearts Weigh The Most” by the band Dance Gavin Dance on the stage of Pinecrest Garden’s Banyan Bowl.

“Our biggest inspiration was a local band called Cowboys and Indians,” Garzon said.

The band formed through the meeting of Chris Garzon and Chris Villasmil in tenth grade. With just a little musical experimentation, they found that the sound their combined passion made seemed like band material. Drummer Danen Reed and guitarist Claudio joined the duo junior year, and thus, Renzi was born.

“Having a band is kind of the primary objective of playing an instrument,” Perez said. “I guess when I met Chris Garzon in my junior year we both just knew what we’d be doing together.”
