Jim Cason the current mayor of Coral Gables lectured for three hours to a group of 100 Palmetto students and teachers in the Media Center on Friday, November 18.

Mayor Cason was asked to speak at Palmetto by members of the Junior State of America Club, which is a part of the Social Science Honor Society. Cason spoke to the students about politics and its various aspects, as well as about a career in politics and its various difficulties.

“We chose him as a speaker because he had a very interesting background,” senior Evan Hacker, who helped organize the event, said. “The students were actively engaged in the presentation and several students asked him questions when he was finished.”

Jim Cason was elected to office on April 12, 2011. He has previously served as a U.S. Foreign Service officer for many years, held the position of U.S. Ambassador to Paraguay, and served in U.S. Embassies in Italy, El Salvador, Panama, Uruguay, Bolivia and Venezuela.

“What made the presentation so interesting was that he had several connections in the world of politics,” Hacker said, “which was beneficial to students who were thinking of following such a career path.”
